Lice Infestations Are like Onions: They Have Layers
How the lice process is like the quest in the Dream Works movie, Shrek
In 2001, the Dream Works movie, Shrek, stole the box office and made a whopping $484.4 million on tickets alone. An estimated 47 million tickets were sold in the U.S and the film rapidly grew in popularity among people of all ages. One of the famous quotes in the film is when Shrek tells Donkey that Ogres are like onions. Donkey replies by saying “They stink? Oh they make you cry… oh, you leave em out in the sun, they get all brown, start sproutin’ little white hairs.” “No,” Shrek says. “Layers. Onions have layers. Ogres have layers. You get it? We both have layers.” Let’s have some fun and compare this popular Blockbuster to the thing we are experts at: the head lice process.
How Are Lice Like Onions?
Much like Ogres, head lice infestations are also like onions; they have layers. Treating head lice infestations is a process with steps. You can’t just comb out the nits without treating the lice and you can’t just treat the lice without combing out the nits (lice eggs). There are layers to the process. If you forget an essential step such as combing out the nits, you will wind up with another infestation because if eggs are left behind, they will hatch and then you will want to scream. Parents often have layers of emotions during the lice process. Panic, then calmness, then anger, then frustration, then eventually relief. We tell parents again and again to try not to panic when discovering head lice. Take a deep breath and tell yourself that you’re ready to conquer it. It’s just part of being a parent with young kids.
A very Frustrating Layer
Have you heard of super lice? Super lice are what make head lice infestations a nightmare. The most frustrating layer of the head lice process is the fact that most store-bought head lice treatments just don’t do the trick anymore. Lice have annoyingly evolved into resistant creatures that are hard to kill. Many mothers and fathers are completely unaware of this so they wind up buying these products and wasting time and money. A study in the Journal of Medical Entomology concluded that 42 out of 48 states that were tested for super lice turned out to be overrun by super lice and 100 percent of the lice tested in these 42 states were resistant to over-the-counter treatments. Texas was one of the states where 100 percent of lice tested were super lice, being resistant to store-bought treatments.
